22 Creedmoor? what's the hype

SO those that know me, know that I have a soft spot and huge love for 6.5 Creedmoor. Now I know ALL the hate and memes out there that simply make fun of the round and anyone who uses it, for that I THANK YOU. Since the hate or the fun has started the prices per round dropped and I am so grateful for the attention and then also for pushing those others away driving that price down. Those around me will admit to the value of the round and tell you we have had no issues to the effectiveness of our rounds, so thanks for the price.

That being said, when I heard of ANOTHER Creedmoor on the market, I was absolutely excited to see what the deal was... and well... here you go...

The .22 Creedmoor takes the familiar 6.5 Creedmoor case and necks it down to accommodate a .22 caliber bullet. This transformation allows for the use of lighter, high-ballistic-coefficient projectiles that boast impressive velocities. We’re talking about bullets in the 70-90 grain range moving at Mach 3+ speeds, making this cartridge a laser for long-range applications.

While the .22 Creedmoor began life as a wildcat cartridge, it’s gained significant traction in the shooting world. Custom loaders and boutique ammunition manufacturers have embraced it, providing high-quality options for those who don’t handload. With brass readily available and loading data becoming more common, the .22 Creedmoor is edging closer to mainstream status, appealing to both competition shooters and hunters.

Designed with precision in mind, the .22 Creedmoor excels in long-range shooting sports. Its flat trajectory and high velocity make it a favorite for those chasing pinpoint accuracy at extended distances. The cartridge’s intelligent case design, inherited from the Creedmoor family, minimizes unnecessary dimensions while maximizing output. For shooters aiming to push past a thousand yards, this cartridge offers a competitive edge.

While primarily celebrated for its precision capabilities, the .22 Creedmoor isn’t limited to punching paper or ringing steel. It’s an excellent choice for varmint and predator hunting, delivering devastating terminal performance on targets like coyotes and prairie dogs. With the right bullet selection, it can even take on larger game like antelope or deer, provided local regulations allow it.

The .22 Creedmoor draws inevitable comparisons to other high-performance .22 caliber cartridges, such as the .22-250 Ackley Improved and the .22 Cheetah. While these cartridges offer similar performance, the .22 Creedmoor shines with its modern case design and adaptability. It fits well in standard rifles chambered for 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 Winchester, offering ease of use without requiring specialized components.

For handloaders, the .22 Creedmoor is a dream. It benefits from the availability of premium bullets designed for precision shooting, such as those from Berger, Hornady, and Sierra. Loaders can fine-tune their setups to maximize the cartridge’s potential, achieving high velocities while maintaining impressive accuracy.

One of the standout features of the .22 Creedmoor is its ability to maintain high speeds over long distances. This translates to reduced wind drift and flatter trajectories, two crucial factors for success in long-range shooting. Shooters appreciate the cartridge’s ability to retain energy and deliver consistent results downrange.

Like any high-velocity cartridge, the .22 Creedmoor demands attention to barrel wear. Its blistering speeds and smaller bore can accelerate throat erosion, particularly under heavy use. Shooters planning to use this cartridge extensively should be prepared for more frequent barrel changes or invest in high-quality barrels designed to handle the heat.

The .22 Creedmoor’s potential extends beyond competition. Its versatility makes it a valuable tool for various shooting disciplines and hunting scenarios. Whether it’s for pest control, tactical shooting, or filling the freezer with game meat, this cartridge has the chops to handle diverse tasks.

The .22 Creedmoor appeals to shooters who appreciate performance and innovation. It bridges the gap between traditional hunting cartridges and modern precision rounds, offering a unique blend of speed, accuracy, and adaptability. For those seeking a cartridge that can do it all, the .22 Creedmoor is an enticing option.

The .22 Creedmoor isn’t just a trendy cartridge; it’s a thoughtfully designed performer that holds its own in a crowded field. While it benefits from the Creedmoor brand’s popularity, its merits stand on their own. Whether you’re a precision shooter, a hunter, or just someone who loves experimenting with new cartridges, the .22 Creedmoor is undoubtedly worth considering. With its combination of speed, accuracy, and versatility, it’s poised to become a staple in the long-range shooting world.
